Ghutu Chopta Via Panwali Trek

This trek visits the beautiful landscape of Panwali and Chopata bugyals, the remote holy famous picturesque temples of Trijoginaran and mountaintop temple of Tungnath. Plus spectacular panoramic view of higher Himalayan range of Gangotri and Nandadevi range from Panwali & Chandrashila. Plus Alpine forests where rhododendron blooms end of April and first week of May in three different colors, plus oak and the stately deodar. Vistas of spectacular ice covered peaks of the high Himalayas - ThalaysagaJonli, Srikanth, Neelkanth. Satopanth. Khachakund. Trishuli. Kamet. Panchachuli and Nandadevi peaks. Frequent sightings of lithe and lively langoor (black faced monkeys) swinging through the tree canopy high above. Chances to see ibex, snow fox, mountain crow & eagles. Hardy bukeriwale (mountain herders) with their flocks of sheep & goats. Visits to picturesque mountain villages. End the trek in the fascinating spiritual & philosophical center of India - colorful Swagashram at Rishkesh

Day By Day Itinerary


Day 1 New Delhi - Rishikesh (225 kms/6 hrs). In the morning drive to Rishikesh. Upon arrival at Rishikesh transfer to the hotel. In the evening visit the Aarti ceremony at Swargashram. Back to hotel for overnight stay.

Rishikesh: Rishikesh is the gateway to the four pilgrimages of Uttaranchal. It's also starting point on the journey to the sacred sources of the Ganga and the Yamuna Rivers. According to legend, Prince Bhagirath performed penance here to salvage the souls of his ancestors who had perished due to Sage Kapila's curse. The penance was answered and the river Ganga trickled forth from Lord Shiva's locks and its bountifulwater revived the sons of King Sagara. In the tradition of Bhagirath, devout Hindus stand in the sacred waters here, praying for the salvation of their ancestors.

Day 2 Rishikesh - Ghuttu (200 kms/8 hrs) Scenic drive through Chamba, the planned town of New Terhi, stopping to view the mighty Terhi Dam. Arrive Ghansali, small town, then follow Bhilangna river through terraced fields, villages, camping (or hotel option) at Ghuttu town set in a wide sunny mountain valley

Day 3 Ghuttu - Gawanmanda (10 kms/5 hrs) 10 k uphill trek through terraced fields, villages, Alpine forest, bhojpatra, rhododendron, oak, and stately deodars. Frequent sightings of families of lithe & lively langoor (like a black-faced monkey) swinging through the tree canopy high above. Trek arrives at camp in Gawanmanda, surrounded by forest and summer huts of villagers. Views back down the valley of Ghuttu.

Day 4 Gawanmanda - Panwali (8 kms/5 hrs) 7 k uphill trek through the Alpine forest passing summer huts of villagers, meeting more langoor Meet with hardy bakriwale (mountain headers) with their flocks of sheep & goats, and Gujars (generally Muslim local mountain people) famous for their high speed mountain walking & their herds of buffalo. Spectaulal panoramic views of the Himalayas of Garhwal and Kumaoun regions. Camp on the famous bugyal of Panwali.

Day 5 Panwali - Maggu (14 kms/7 hrs) 4 k uphill trek through the Alpine forest and bugyals , then 6 k up and down ridge trek with spectacular vies onto the Gangotri Range mountains, then 4 k downhill trek along the ridge and forests to camp at Maggu.

Day 6 Maggu - Trijoginarayan (8 kms/4 hrs) 8 k downhill trek through the Alpine forests, summer huts of villagers, camp above the village of Trijoginarayan, visiting the temples of Lord Vishnu and the village, with spectacular views of Kedarnath, Kedadome, Kammet, and Neelkhant, etc..

Day 7 Trijoginarayan - Chopta (70 kms/5 hrs) Scenic drive along the Mandakini river to Guptkasi, crossing that river by bridge, on through the terraced fields and villages, Alpine forest, camping at Chopta. Spectacular views of the Choukhamba mountains (end of April/May rhododendrons of many colors everywhere).

Day 8 Day Trek Tungnath & Chandershila (10 kms/6 hrs) 5 k total uphill trek through Alpine forests and bugyals with spectacular views of Choukhamba mountains (end of April/May rhododendrons of many colors everywhere). Tungnath features the Temple of Lord Shiva - the highest temple in all India. Continue trek to Chandershila, with its spectacular panoramic closeup views of Kumaoun and Garhwal region's Himalayas. Return 5 k through Alpine forests and bugyals to camp at Chopta.

Day 9 Chopta - Rishikesh (240 kms/8 hrs) Scenic drive alonag the Mandakini river to its confluence with the Alaknanda river at Rudraprayag, along the Alaknanda river through the big town of Srinagar, to the confluence with the Bhagirathi river at Devprayag. Drive along the Ganga to Rishikesh. Stay in hotel. (Possible to reach Haridwar to explore this popular and beautiful shrine town as opposed to Rishikesh. One hour further)

Day 10 Rishikesh -Delhi (225 kms/6 hrs). Return to Delhi
