Mayali Pass Trek

This trek visits the remote holy famous pilgrimage temples of Badrinath & Gangotri, plus Gomukh - glacial source of the sacred River Ganges, spiritual heart of India amid awesome mountains. Alpine forests of bhojpatra, (the famous "paper tree"), juniper, and the stately deodar. The Nandanvan & Ghastoli bugyals (Alpine meadows). Dramatic crossings of Mayali Pass. Camping on Sita Glacier and 'Mayali Base'. Spectacular views of the famous snow capped high Himalayas - Shivling, Mehru Massif, Bhagirathi Massif, Kedardome, Kharchakund, Basukiparvat, Satopanth, Neelkanth.

Mayali Pass Trek

Vasuki Tal and Arwa Tal mountain lakes. Hardy bakriwale (mountain headers) with their flocks of sheep & goats, frequent sightings of families of lithe & lively langoor (like a black-faced monkey) swinging through the tree canopy high above. Chances to see ibex, snow fox, mountain crow & eagles. Visits to the unusual Mana mountain village.

Day 1 : New Delhi - Rishikesh (225 kms/6 hrs)
Mayali-pass-trek-photos In the morning drive to Rishikesh. Upon arrival at Rishikesh transfer to the hotel. In the evening visit the Aarti ceremony at Swargashram. Back to hotel for overnight stay.

Rishikesh : Rishikesh is the gateway to the four pilgrimages of Uttaranchal. It's also starting point on the journey to the sacred sources of the Ganga and the Yamuna Rivers. According to legend, Prince Bhagirath performed penance here to salvage the souls of his ancestors who had perished due to Sage Kapila's curse. The penance was answered and the river Ganga trickled forth from Lord Shiva's locks and its bountiful water revived the sons of King Sagara. In the tradition of Bhagirath, devout Hindus stand in the sacred waters here, praying for the salvation of their ancestors.

Day 2 : Rishikesh - Uttarkashi (185 kms/6 hrs)
Drive to Uttarkashi, located on the Bhagirathi River in the foothills of the Himalayas. Upon arrival at Uttarkahi transfer check into the hotel.

Vishwanath Temple : One of the major Shiva worship centers for all India, this ancient and renowned temple is an interesting and important pilgrimage and touristic monument.
Uttarkashi Town : Situated on a new lake, this clean and nature-surrounded little city features a line of ashrams along the banks of the Bhagirathi River, an early branch of the sacred Ganga.
Nehru Institute of Mountaineering : World famous institution of instruction for the mountaineer.

Day 3 : Uttarkashi - Gangotri (100 kms/5 hrs)
Mayali-pass-trekking-photos5 hours by vehicle from Uttarkashi, market center north central Garhwal, set in a valley surrounded by foothills and terraced valleys, Scenic drive along the roaring Bhagirati River, one of the source rivers of the sacred Ganges, through terraced fields, deodar forests, apple orchards, and villages to Gangotri (one of the Char Dham - the series of holy pilgrimage sites, the four sources of the Ganges & Yamuna Rivers) set in an enchanting forest of deodar pines, featuring the impressive Gangotri waterfall, and the historic picturesquel sited Gangotri temple, where the evening puja (colorful prayer ceremony) can be enjoyed. Stay in hotel.

Day 4 : Gangotri- Bhojkharak (12kms/6hrs)
Steep 12 k uphill trek through a pine, deodar, & bhojpatra the famous "paper tree") forest, along the Rudraganga river valley, and cross the Rudraganga - trek winds high up on the ridge for the camp - spectacular views of Gangotri valley at the camp in Bhoj Karak - a bugyal (Alpine meadow) with views of receding ridges & mountains.

Day 5 : Bhojkharak-Rudragaira B.C (10kms/6hrs)
Steep 10 k uphill trek along ridges and through bugyals, with continual surrounding spectacular views of mountains & glaciers. See ibex and meet with bakriwales (sheep & goat headers) (june - september), and the opportunity to see snow fox, mountain crow, & circling vultures. Camp in the Rudragaira Base Camp, a bugyal with mountain views.The Rudragaira is the expedition's base camp for Gangotri massif & Rudragaira peak.

Day 6 : Rudragaira B.C. - Rudragaira Bamak (7kms/8hrs)
Steep 3 k ridge uphill trek (views of rocky crags, Gangotri Massif), then cross the Rudragaira River, then 4 k up and down moraine walk on Rudragaira Bamak (glacier). Spectacular view down the valley to Gangotri and waterfalls. Beautiful camp actually on the ice surface of the glacier, surrounded my nearby mountains (Bhirigupanth, Joggin Massif, Gangotri III, Odiancol Pass). Sunset views.

Day 7 : Rudragaira Bamak - Khatling Bamak (7kms/7hrs)
Mayali-pass-trek-imagesSteep 5 k uphill trek and climb and rope-up on a glacier, crossing crevasses, then cross Odiancoll Pass (spectacular views of both valleys and nearby mountain peaks (Jonli, Bhirgupanth, Gangotri III, Thalaysagar. etc.) Dramatic descent 2k of Khatling Glacier to a camp actually on the glacier (one of the largest glaciers in Garhwal) with views of crevasses, the valley below, and nearby surrounding mountains.

Day 8 : Khatling Bamak - Khatling B.C.(12kms/7hrs)
Dramatic descent along Khatling Glacier with crevasses. Rope-ups, views up and down the glacier to Khatling Base Camp - The Khatling Glacier is the source of Bhilangna River with close mountain views and bugyals.

Day 9 : Khatling B.C - Chowki (12kms/7hrs)
Gentle 12 k downhill trek crossing mountain torrents, along the Bhilangna River. , through the moraines& juniper, to the camp at Chowki surrounded by bhujpatra trees Beautiful camp site in the river bank.

Day 10 : Chowki - Mashartal (7kms/5hrs)
Gentle 3 k uphill trek along the Mayali River, through buguals, along ridge lines, then steep 4 k uphill trek through juniper forest seeing famous, tremendously fragrant brahamkamal flowers (bloom july - august). Camp on the shores of a mountain lake (Mashar Tal) - pilgrimage site for local villagers. Spectacular views of Khatling Glacier & Thalaysager & Jonli mountains & Jogin Massif.

Day 11 : Mashartal- Vasukital(10kms/8hrs)
Mayali-pass-trekking-imagesModerate 4 k uphill trek to Mayali Pass on a small glacier, through Mayali Pass with spectacular views of Himalyan peaks (Kedarnath, Kedardome, Kiritistumbh, etc.), then moderate 6 k downhill trek through bugyals and Moraines & juniper with views down the valley. Camp at Vasuki Tal - famous sacred lake, surrounded by ridge lines. See ibex and meet with bakriwales (june - september).

Day 12 : Vasukital- Kedarnath (9kms/5hrs)
Uphill 3 k, then steep 6 k downhill trek through meadows with spectacular views of mountain peaks and down into Kedarnath valley to the historic holy shrine of Lord Shiva at Kedarnath Temple (one of the Char Dham - set beneath glacier covered peaks - Kedardome, Kedarnath, etc. Camp near the historic Kedarnath temple, where the evening puja (colorful prayer ceremony) can be enjoyed.

Day 13 : Kedarnath - Rest day
Leisurely explorations around the scenic and cultural area of Kedarnath, Ghandi Sarovar (lake), views, ancient sadhu (holy man) caves, etc.

Day 14 : Kedarnath - Srinagar (140kms/10hrs)
Easy 14 k downhill trek through the Mandakini river to busy Gourikund market town, then drive to Srinagar through the Rudra Pariyag (confluence of Alaknanda and Mandakini river) to a stay at the hotel Srinagar (hot showers).

Day 15 : Srinagar - Rishikesh (95kms/5hrs)
7 hours by vehicle to Rishikesh. Scenic drive through the Himalayan foothills, along the valleys the Mandakini, Alakananda, and Ganga Rivers, above terraced fields, looking up towards villages clinging to mountain spurs above fertile fields in the valleys below to Rishikesh, featuring the beautiful & peaceful Swagashram community - spiritual center of Hindu and "New Age" religion & philosophy on the wooded banks of the Ganges made famous in the 1960s by the Beatles. Opportunity to visit and participate in the colorful evening "arti" river side puja in honor of the river godess, Ganga.

Day 16 : Rishikesh - Delhi(225 kms/6 hrs)
Return to Delhi.
